Description
Scott Aerator ½ hp Solar Boilermaker Aerator (2-Panel): Pond Aeration Without Grid Power
Need to aerate a remote pond without a reliable electricity source? The ½ hp Solar Boilermaker Aerator is your solution. Featuring a variable-speed, submersible Franklin Electric motor, this system moves up to 200 gallons of water per minute.
The Boilermaker is an environmentally friendly water aerator designed to improve pond health with minimal water display. Its compact design and solar power provide efficient water circulation, boosting oxygen levels. This added oxygen benefits fish and helps break down organic matter at the pond bottom, reducing muck over time. The Boilermaker also creates strong surface currents to quickly clear algae and floating debris.
This unit operates during the day, activating with sunlight. It runs at varying speeds depending on light conditions and automatically turns off at night. The solar PV array panels adjust water flow based on sunlight, eliminating the need for expensive, high-maintenance batteries often required by other solar aerators. The motor is constructed from stainless steel and is oil-free for exceptional durability and low maintenance.
Beyond aeration, the Boilermaker works effectively as a pond de-icer in winter. Like all Scott Aerator Company products, it's built to avoid costly winterization. Simply leave the aerator in the water, disconnect the power, and it's ready for use when the ice melts. All components withstand sub-zero temperatures without damage.
This easy-to-install system includes the Boilermaker aerator, two solar panels with a frame, a disconnect box, a Fhoton™ drive solar inverter, and all necessary wiring. You will need to supply a vertical pole for the panels and frame, a concrete footing for the pole, and two anchor ropes with weights or tethers for the aerator.
The Boilermaker is proudly made in the USA and includes an unconditional 5-year motor warranty. It comes with 70 feet of heavy-duty, 12-gauge, submersible power cord, with longer lengths available.
The Boilermaker Solar Aerator works in both fresh and saltwater. Always disconnect the power source when swimmers are present.
Installation
1. Assemble The Unit
Assembling Scott Aerator Fountains typically takes 15-20 minutes. Instructions are included with your fountain kit. Kits contain:
- Pump with cylindrical casing and attached power cable
- Square float platform
- Protective stainless steel filter
- Decorative nozzle (not applicable to the DA-20)
- 5/16"x2" stainless steel bolts
- Stainless steel nuts & washers
- Self-tapping stainless steel screws
Tools Needed: A wrench (or socket driver) and pliers.

Assembly Steps:
- Place the fountain housing on a stable surface with the pump discharge opening facing up.
- Attach nylon rope (not included) to the two stainless steel eyebolts for anchoring.
- Position the float and secure it using the included 5/16" x 2" bolts, washers, and nuts.
- Invert the fountain, remove the Styrofoam doughnut, and install the stainless steel filter. Align the pre-drilled holes with the filter's position marks. Secure the filter with the three self-tapping screws provided.
2. Attach Lights (Skip if no lights ordered)
Scott Aerator fountain light kits easily attach to the square float platform. Light kits include:
- (2) or (4) LED light fixtures with power cable
- 1/2" bolts & nuts
- (2) or (4) stainless steel arm brackets
- Timer/control unit
- Remote control (for color-changing lights only)
Tools Needed: Wrench & Pliers
*Note: The included timer/control unit is required for light operation. Do not disconnect the cord from the control unit; doing so voids the light warranty.

Assembly Steps:
- Attach each arm assembly to the water feature. Ensure the arms are oriented with the “L” facing upward. Remove one of the 2" bolts securing the float to your Scott water feature and align the holes with the stainless steel arm. Reinsert the bolt with washer through the housing, float, and stainless steel arm. Secure with washer and nut. Repeat for the remaining arm assemblies.
- Attach each light to the slotted end of the stainless steel arms. Insert a 1/2" x 1/4" bolt downward through each light bracket and steel arm, then secure with a 1/4" nut. Adjust light position along the arm by loosening the lock nut, sliding the light, and re-tightening.
- Connect the lights to the Timer Control Unit by aligning the pins and screwing the connector together a half turn only. Avoid overtightening to prevent damage to the O-ring or wiring.
3. Place in Water
- Once assembled, the unit is ready for placement in the water for final setup and anchoring.
- Handle the fountain carefully; avoid resting its weight on the stainless steel filter.
- Once the fountain head is submerged, secure it by screwing it into place (not applicable to the DA-20).
- Float the fountain to the desired location and secure the attached nylon ropes to the shore or use two concrete blocks submerged at least 20 feet apart.
- Finally, connect your fountain and lights to your established power source. Always use a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) and consult a licensed electrical contractor for power source installation.
Buying Guide
Choosing Horsepower
- Horsepower affects the size and flow rate of your fountain's spray. More horsepower means more water movement and a larger or thicker spray.
- Consider your budget and pond size when choosing horsepower. A good rule is to keep at least 10 feet between the fountain spray and the pond's edge.
Choosing Voltage
- If using 115V power at the pond's edge, be aware of the maximum distances from pump to breaker (including power cord length).
- For 230V power at the pond's edge, distance is generally not a concern.

Choosing LED Lights (Optional)
- Lights can be purchased now or added later. Light sets easily attach to the float.
- Lights operate on 110V and have their own power cord.
- Options include single-color warm white LED lights or color-changing LED lights.
- Both options include a programmable timer. Color-changing lights come with a remote control effective up to 1,000 feet away.
- 2-light sets are recommended for 1 HP and below.
- 3-light sets are recommended for 1.5 HP and 2 HP.
- 4-light sets are recommended for 3 HP.
Choosing Timers (Optional)
- Timers can be purchased now or added later.
- Timers are designed only for controlling fountains, not lights.
- FAQ: The residential 230V timer box is plastic, while the commercial box is metal. Both function the same way.
Additional Nozzles (Optional)
- Can't decide on a fountain style? Scott Aerator fountain pumps work with all Scott Aerator nozzles.
- Choose from 9 unique nozzles for various spray patterns!
- Note: Not all nozzles are available for every motor size. Ensure you select nozzles compatible with your chosen horsepower.

FAQ
Fountains
Q: How do I choose the right fountain?
A: Consider your main goal: aeration, aesthetics, or both. Aerating Fountains circulate more water than aesthetic fountains, making them better for aeration. For aesthetics, many styles are available. Ensure your pond meets minimum depth requirements and that the spray display fits within the pond's size. Display dimensions are listed on each fountain product page.
Note: Fountains and surface aerators effectively aerate water up to about 6 feet deep.
Q: What horsepower should I choose for my fountain?
A: Horsepower indicates motor size and affects spray pattern size. Ensure your pond is deep enough and the spray won't go beyond the pond edges, regardless of horsepower. Our fountains are best for ponds a quarter acre or larger (depending on shape). Consider your budget and desired size when selecting horsepower.
Q: Should I hire someone to install my fountain?
A: If you need a power source installed by the pond, a licensed electrician should do this. Our fountains are relatively simple to install once the power source is ready. Many customers install their own fountains to save money, but consider your available resources.
Q: Which is better for me: 110-120V or 210-240V?
A: 210 to 240 volts is generally better if the power source is over 70 feet from the main breaker. Ensure your power source can handle the higher voltage for consistent operation. Using lower voltage too far from the breaker may result in inconsistent performance. Contact us with any questions.
Q: Are lights included in the price?
A: No, lights are not included by default. You can order them with your fountain or add them later. Attaching them to the floating unit is simple and a worthwhile addition.
Q: What factors determine the price of the power cord?
A: Material costs are a key factor. Power cords for fountains vary from 14-gauge copper or stainless steel wire to 4-gauge, depending on fountain size and cord length.
Q: Is it acceptable to leave my fountain in the water during winter?
A: Scott Aerator Fountains can remain in the water throughout winter. You can run them continuously or turn them off completely. They will be ready to use once the ice thaws.
Aerators
Q: Can aeration help maintain fish health and clean my pond?
A: Yes, absolutely. Aeration is the first step in improving pond water quality.
Q: How do I choose an aerator?
A: Pond size and depth guide your choice. Our website categorizes products by pond size (in acres). Surface Aerators and Aerating Fountains work well for ponds under six feet deep. Sub-Surface aerators are recommended for deeper ponds.
Q: How do I install my aerator?
A: Consult a licensed electrician if a power source is not already installed by the pond. Our aerators are designed for straightforward installation once the power source is ready. Many customers install the equipment themselves to save money, but consider your resources.
Q: How should I configure the aeration setup?
A: An ideal setup includes a surface aerator or aerating fountain combined with a Sub-Surface aerator. The surface unit helps circulate oxygen released from the pond bottom effectively.
